UT Austin BME CUReS Cancer

UT Austin's BME CUReS Cancer REU program is a ten-week intensive research experience. Participants conduct research related to cancer under a faculty mentor and a graduate student mentor. In addition, there are weekly seminars regarding professional development and career options, field trips to nearby medical schools, and social events.

 

The program stipend is $5000 for the 10 weeks from May 28-August 8, and students also receive on-campus housing and meals. Additional funding includes $250 for travel to Austin and $650 to allow participants to present their summer work at the 2015 BMES annual conference in Tampa.  

 

Application deadline: March 1, 2015  

Notification date: April 15, 2015

Other requirements: rising sophomore or junior in engineering or qualitative science major, resume/CV, unofficial transcript, 3 short answer questions, 2 letters of recommendation 

 

Harvard Summer Internships

February 9, 2015

Harvard's Center for Casual Consequences Variation (CCV) summer research internships is a ten-week program featuring research in biology and genetics. The program is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Students will conduct independent research, attend seminars at MIT and Harvard, work on professional development, and participate in social activities. The program begins in mid-June. Participants receive a $4000 stipend and free housing near Harvard Medical School.

University of Pennsylvania's USSP

February 2, 2015

The University of Pennsylvania's Undergraduate Student Scholars Program (USSP) is a summer program featuring biomedical research, lectures, and presentations. The program is sponsored by the UPenn NIH Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Diseases and runs from June 8 to August 14. A $4000 stipend is provided. The Center's three research themes are: developmental biology and regenerative medicine; immunobiology and host responses; cell growth and differentation. Participants should be interested in pursuing a PhD, MD or MD-PhD. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Syracuse University Biomaterials REU

January 19, 2015

Syracuse University's Biomaterials REU is a ten-week research experience for undergraduates. The program runs May 31 through August 7. A $5400 stipend and housing are provided. Research areas include drug delivery, polymers, cell culture, hydrogels, biomimetic interfaces, bacterial cells, and bioprinting. Research faculty are located at Syracuse and SUNY sites. Participants will gain valuable research experience and have professional development opportunities.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital SURF

January 12, 2015

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is a ten-week research-oriented program for undergraduate students. Participants conduct biomedical research under the supervision of a faculty member. Additional opportunities include training, seminars, journal clubs, and career days. Student present their work at the end of the summer. The stipend for the program is around $4000, and housing is available at the University of Cincinnati nearby. Program start date can be May 26th or June 1st.

Boston University CELEST Program

January 5, 2015

Boston University's CELEST program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research and gain experience under a faculty advisor. Minorities are encouraged to apply. Faculty mentors come from numerous areas including neuroscience, computer engineering, and biology. The ten-week program runs from June 1 to August 8, 2015. Beyond work, other activities include professional development workshops, lab tours, and social events. On campus housing, a $4500 stipend, and up to $550 in travel expenses are included.

NASA Interns, Fellows, and Scholars

NASA Interns, Fellows, and Scholars program has numerous undergraduate internship opportunities. For the summer term, appointments run for 8-10 weeks from late May/early June to early August. There are facilities in California, Texas, Florida, and Alabama, among others, at which the internships take place. Some of the available programs in the life sciences or are related to the biomedical field. For example, in the Undergraduate Student Research Program, participants conduct research and complete a technical paper. The link lists many other opportunities as well.

HudsonAlpha BioTrain

Since our speaker this week was Dr. Jian Han from HudsonAlpha, we are featuring HudsonAlpha's internship program.

HudsonAlpha's BioTrain program is an 8-week program that is an excellent way to gain some research experience. HudsonAlpha is located in Huntsville, Alabama. Participants attend "Biotech Bootcamp," a one-week program to enhance skills necessary for research. 25-20 applicants are accepted as interns, and those chosen will work closely with experts and scientists in the biotechnology field. Professional development sessions are also an integral part of the program. Interns are typically paid an hourly wage an work 10-40 hours per week.

UCSF Summer Research Program

November 10, 2014

Summer Research Program at University of California San Francisco is an 10-week program beginning May 26. Positions will allow students to conduct intensive research in the biomedical field among UCSF professors. Research areas include bioengineering, biomedical sciences, and a variety of other areas listed on the website. Participants attend seminars, lectures, and social events outside of their research. An optional GRE prep course is also provided. There are a wide variety of specific programs included within the overall program. Students will complete a presentation at the end of the program. A $4000 stipend will be provided in addition to housing in San Francisco, a travel stipend, and a public transit pass.

BiomedRAP

November 3, 2014

BiomedRAP at Washington University in St. Louis is an 10-week program beginning May 28. Positions will allow students to conduct intensive research in the biomedical field among accomplished scientists. Participants attend seminars and workshops outside of their research work and get valuable career advice. Undergrads with no prior research experience are encouraged to apply. Students will complete a presentation at the end of the program. A $4000 stipend will be provided in addition to housing, travel, and some meals.

St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Education

October 27, 2014

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) program is an 11-week program from mid-May or early June to August 2015 which seeks to promote cancer research careers. Positions will either be in clinical or laboratory research, and students will interect will superb physicians and scientists at the hospital. Participants attend lectures and conferences outside of their work, which can be in a wide variety of departments. Students will complete oral and written reports by the end of the program. A $4000 stipend and free housing will be provided. Applicants must have prior research experience.

NIH SIP and BESIP

October 13 & 20, 2014

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research is a minimum 8-week program that provides an opportunity to work alongside leading scientists at the NIH for a summer. The program features activities including seminars, workshops, and Summer Poster Day. Participants receive funding from their specific host. Typical locations are in Baltimore, MD, or the Research Triangle in North Carolina.

The NIH also has a Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) sponsered by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering in Bethesda, MD. The 10-week program will run from June 1 to August 7, 2015. Students will work closely with leading scientists on biomedical research projects in addition to participating in group meetings, lectures, lab visits, and NIH Poster Day. Participants must have completed their junior year.

Duke SROP

October 6, 2014

Duke University's Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is a 10-week program that provides a unique graduate-level biomedical research experience for undergrads. The program also features seminars, workshops, and social events. Participants receive housing and food allowances in addition to a stipend. The program will run May 26 to August 1, 2015, with students presenting their work at the end of the summer.
